Plastic Planet – A Visit to Clonakilty Library

22nd Oct 2025
  •

Today, pupils from 3rd to 6th Class attended an engaging and thought-provoking performance of Plastic Planet at Clonakilty Library. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the library team for the kind invitation and for organising such a wonderful educational experience.

The show explored the many reasons why our planet is so unique — from the fascinating behaviour of animals to the surprising ways in which trees communicate. Through practical demonstrations, these often complex aspects of nature were made clear and accessible for students, sparking curiosity and discussion.

At the heart of Plastic Planet is a focus on young people’s role in fighting climate change. The performance linked directly to key areas of the Science, Geography, and SPHE curricula. It encouraged pupils to think about the beauty and fragility of our natural world while also examining the real-world impact of issues such as mobile phone production, including their carbon footprint and social consequences like child labour.

The question at the centre of the show — “What is our impact on the environment?” — encouraged students to reflect on their own choices and the simple, practical actions they can take to make a difference.

Delivered with a perfect balance of humour, honesty, and interactivity, Plastic Planet kept students fully engaged throughout. Volunteers from the audience helped bring the key ideas to life through demonstrations that made complex environmental topics both understandable and memorable.

It was an inspiring and educational experience that reminded us all of the importance of caring for our planet — and the power each of us has to protect it.
