James the Gull – A Special Rescue at Scoil na mBuachaillí

2nd Oct 2025

Not every school day ends with a herring gull tucked into bed – but then again, Scoil na mBuachaillí is full of surprises!

The story began when someone reported seeing a gull limping around the playground car park. The gull, possibly female, appeared injured and in need of help. Acting quickly, 2 of our fabulous SNAs, Claire and Marguerite, grabbed a box and towel for the rescue mission.

With calm coordination, the gull was safely caught – not without a peck on the finger from James, who clearly wasn’t giving in without a fight! The injury stung, but the mission was a success.

Back in school, one of our pupils gave the gull the name James and the children had a chance to see the new arrival wrapped gently in a towel. Claire then brought James home to recover in comfort and safety.

James received care for its injuries, fresh water, and a well-earned meal of tuna. An Epsom salt bath and a gentle shower helped soothe sore legs and wings. Afterwards, James was dried in front of the stove, wrapped in a towel, and placed into a cosy bed made from cardboard and straw.

Thanks to their quick thinking and gentle care, James the gull is now well on the way to recovery – a perfect example of the compassion and kindness shown every day at Scoil na mBuachaillí.

The staff in SNB are not only incredibly caring, but also wonderful role models for the pupils – showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.
