Exploring Maths Through Hands-On Learning

23rd Jan 2026

Learning through activity and exploration is at the heart of teaching and learning at our school. Recently, pupils across different class levels engaged in hands-on Maths lessons, with Junior Infants and 4th Class taking part in age-appropriate, active learning experiences.

In Junior Infants, pupils explored the concept of capacity, making strong links between Mathematics and Science. Using a range of containers and everyday materials, the children investigated which containers hold more, less or the same amount. Through pouring, filling and comparing, pupils developed early mathematical language while also engaging in scientific skills such as observing, predicting and experimenting. Learning was play-based, active and full of curiosity.

Meanwhile, 4th Class pupils took part in Maths stations, where they rotated between a variety of hands-on and problem-solving activities. These stations allowed pupils to work collaboratively, apply mathematical strategies and deepen their understanding through practical tasks. The station approach encouraged independence, discussion and active engagement, while allowing pupils to learn at their own pace.

These lessons highlight the value of active, hands-on learning across the school, supporting progression in mathematical understanding while fostering curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning.
