ππ¬ Science Week Ireland Celebrates 30 Years! π¬π
This year, Science Week Ireland celebrated its 30th anniversary with the theme “Then. Today. Tomorrow.” — a nationwide celebration of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, highlighting how science shapes our everyday lives.
At SNB, we’re proud to be part of the excitement! π
π Hands-On Science in the Garden
On Monday, our Gardening Team took advantage of the dry weather to gather more leaves for our leaf composter!
Why our leaf composter matters:
π Turns fallen leaves into nutrient-rich leaf mould
π± Improves soil health and retains moisture
πΏ Supports plant growth and biodiversity
β»οΈ Teaches students about sustainability + natural cycles
A wonderful way for students to see real-world environmental science in action!
π¦ STEM Boxes in Every Classroom
Our STEM Committee delivered science boxes to every class, giving students hands-on opportunities to explore experiments, challenges, and STEM activities throughout the week. Curiosity activated! β¨π
π³ 3rd Class: Climate Resilience Project
3rd Class is continuing their work with the GLOBE Ireland “Climate Resilience – Temperatures and Trees Project.”
Through temperature measurements and tree observations, students are learning how nature helps regulate our environment — and how climate resilience matters for the future. ππ‘οΈπ±
π΅οΈβοΈ 5th Class: CSI Workshop
On Wednesday, 5th Class visited Clonakilty Library for an exciting CSI Workshop!
They learned real forensic techniques to solve an imaginary crime, examining “evidence” and putting their detective skills to the test. π¬π§ͺπ
π‘ All Classes Engaging in STEM
Every class in SNB is taking part in STEM activities this week — exploring, building, experimenting, and discovering. Science isn’t just something we read about…
β¨ It’s something we do! β¨
Let’s continue to celebrate Then. Today. Tomorrow.
π Volcano Eruptions in the Classroom!
Several classes brought the theme to life with the classic volcano experiment! Just as scientists explored chemical reactions in the past (Then), our students experienced hands-on discovery (Today), sparking excitement that will inspire tomorrow’s innovators (Tomorrow).
The fizzy, bubbling eruptions were a huge hit! ππ
π§οΈ A Mini Rainstorm Indoors!
Students explored weather science through our Rain Cloud Experiment. With jars of water, fluffy shaving-foam clouds, and colourful dye, they watched rain fall in real time. πβοΈ
A fun and visual way to understand how clouds become full and release rain!
π Balloon Inflation Magic!
Our budding chemists mixed vinegar and baking soda to inflate balloons using carbon dioxide. ππ§ͺ
No blowing needed — just pure science! Students learned about chemical reactions, prediction-making, and cause and effect.
π οΈπ¨ Wind-Powered Vehicles!
Students put their engineering skills to the test by designing wind-powered cars using everyday materials. After building their models, they raced them with a puff of air! ππ¨
This STEM challenge encouraged teamwork, creativity, and an understanding of renewable energy.
𧲠Junior Infants Explore Magnetism!
Our Junior Infants became little scientists as they explored the magic of magnetism! They tested which objects were magnetic, investigated attraction and repulsion, and experimented with magnet wands. π§²β¨
They were amazed to learn that magnets can pull through paper, plastic, and even water — a week filled with “wow” moments for our youngest explorers! π
