Celebrating Engineering Week in Scoil na mBuachaillí

6th Mar 2026

Engineering Week provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils

Engineering Week provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils in Scoil na mBuachaillí to explore how science, engineering and problem-solving shape the world around us. Throughout the week, the boys took part in a range of exciting activities and visits that brought STEM learning to life.

Engineering Week is a nationwide initiative celebrated across Ireland each year. It aims to inspire young people to explore the world of engineering and to discover how engineering shapes everyday life. Through fun, hands-on activities and workshops, pupils are encouraged to develop curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills while learning about the many exciting careers in engineering.

As part of the celebrations, it was the turn of our Senior Infants to visit Clonakilty Fire Station, where they met members of the local fire service and learned about the engineering behind the equipment and vehicles used in emergency response. The pupils explored the fire engines, examined the tools and breathing apparatus firefighters rely on, and discovered how teamwork, technology and clever design help firefighters do their jobs safely and effectively. It was a memorable and exciting visit for the boys.

As part of Engineers Week, 4th Class visited Clonakilty Library where they took part in a special workshop hosted by Anyone4Science. The workshop, titled Forces – Test the Strength of Jelly Sweets, challenged the boys to design and build their own force meters. They investigated pulling forces by testing the strength of jelly sweets while learning about fair testing, repeatable experiments and reliable results. It was a hands-on and highly engaging way to explore important engineering and scientific concepts. A sincere thank you to Denis at Clonakilty Library for organising this event.

Back in school, our 5th and 6th Class pupils also celebrated Engineers Week by taking part in an exciting Engineering Quiz, where they put their knowledge, creativity and teamwork skills to the test while answering quiz questions based on engineering. A sincere thank you to Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice for organising the quiz and to Noreen Collins for coordinating the prizes for the event.

Engineering Week highlighted the importance of curiosity, innovation and problem-solving, and the boys thoroughly enjoyed exploring how engineering impacts everyday life. A sincere thank you to Clonakilty Fire Station, Clonakilty Library, and Anyone4Science for supporting these wonderful learning experiences.

Well done to all the pupils for their enthusiasm and participation during a very successful Engineering Week in Scoil na mBuachaillí! ⚙️🔬
