🐔🥚 Cracking Celebrations for World Egg Day at Scoil na mBuachaillí! 🎉

10th Oct 2025

Scoil na mBuachaillí proudly celebrated World Egg Day with the help of three very special members of our school community – our beloved hens Gloria, Rita, and Betty! These feathered friends have become firm favourites with pupils and staff alike, and this week they laid an incredible 18 eggs – talk about hard work!

To mark the occasion, Ms. O'Shea will be baking with the boys later this week, using our freshly laid eggs to whip up a batch of delicious homemade brownies. The school is already buzzing with excitement (and hungry tummies)!

Meanwhile, our fantastic caretaker Finbarr has been busy helping the pupils with a special building project. Using an old cabinet, he’s leading the charge on an upcycling project to create a shaded area for the chicken coop. It’s a brilliant way to protect Gloria, Rita, and Betty on rainy days – and a great example of sustainability in action.

🧠 As today is also World Mental Health Day, we’re delighted to officially launch our new wellbeing project, inspired by the calm and joy our chickens bring to everyday school life.

Even more exciting, the hens have inspired a group of pupils to begin a science investigation titled:
“Are our school chickens improving our wellbeing?”
They’re exploring how interacting with Gloria, Rita, and Betty might be helping students feel calmer, more focused, and happier at school. The boys hope to present their findings at science fairs in Limerick and Dublin next term.

From eggs to experiments, upcycling to baking, and mental health to meaningful projects, today’s celebrations remind us just how much joy, learning, and community spirit our chickens bring to life here at Scoil na mBuachaillí. 🐣💛
