π 3rd Class Celebrate Air Quality Results from GLOBE Ireland Campaign π
Our 3rd Class pupils recently took part in the GLOBE Ireland Air Quality Campaign, a nationwide project that monitors nitrogen dioxide (NOβ) levels around schools — and we are delighted to share their results!
As part of the campaign, pupils used special air quality monitoring tubes to gather real scientific data from around the school environment. Before placing the tubes, the class learned about air pollution, where it comes from, and how it can affect our health. They then carefully selected locations that would allow them to compare air quality in areas with different traffic and environmental conditions.
The three monitoring locations chosen were:
-
The bypass entrance to the school
-
The school entrance on O’Rahilly Street
-
The playing pitch in the school yard, a more sheltered area
The tubes were left in place for four weeks and were taken down on Tuesday, October 22nd before being returned to the laboratory for analysis.
π We are delighted to report that the results place Clonakilty in the Average air quality range, with an average NOβ reading of 7.52. This is an excellent real-world result for pupils to analyse and discuss, and it provides valuable insight into the air quality around our school.
This project gave pupils a fantastic opportunity to engage in hands-on science, work with real data, and see how environmental monitoring happens in real life. The excitement of contributing to a national study and receiving meaningful results made the learning experience even more impactful.
Well done to our 3rd Class pupils for their hard work, curiosity and commitment to environmental awareness. π±
π Check back soon as pupils continue to explore and interpret the findings!
