🌳National Tree Day – Scots Pine Spotlight
Today, October 2nd, we celebrated National Tree Day in Ireland – a day to recognise the importance of trees in our environment and to encourage greater awareness of nature among young people.
A big thank you to Ewan Brooks Griffin and Luca O’Donovan, who visited classrooms to speak about this year’s chosen tree – the Scots Pine. They shared interesting facts about its role in Ireland’s natural heritage and helped pupils understand why protecting native trees is so important.
Ewan and Luca showed great leadership and confidence in delivering their message, and their efforts were appreciated by pupils and staff alike.
Well done, boys, for helping to make National Tree Day meaningful and memorable at Scoil na mBuachaillí.

😁Not every school day ends with a herring gull tucked into bed – but then again, Scoil na mBuachaillí is full of surprises!
🪶The story began when someone reported seeing a gull limping around the playground car park. The gull, possibly female, appeared injured and in need of help. Acting quickly, 2 of our fabulous SNAs, Claire and Marguerite, grabbed a box and towel for the rescue mission.
🤕With calm coordination, the gull was safely caught – not without a peck on the finger from James, who clearly wasn’t giving in without a fight! The injury stung, but the mission was a success.
🥰Back in school, one of our pupils gave the gull the name James and the children had a chance to see the new arrival wrapped gently in a towel. Claire then brought James home to recover in comfort and safety.
⛑️James received care for its injuries, fresh water, and a well-earned meal of tuna. An Epsom salt bath and a gentle shower helped soothe sore legs and wings. Afterwards, James was dried in front of the stove, wrapped in a towel, and placed into a cosy bed made from cardboard and straw.
💕Thanks to their quick thinking and gentle care, James the gull is now well on the way to recovery – a perfect example of the compassion and kindness shown every day at Scoil na mBuachaillí.
💞The staff in SNB are not only incredibly caring, but also wonderful role models for the pupils – showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.

♟️Our school is delighted to offer a vibrant Afterschool Chess Club that fosters strategic thinking, patience, and a lifelong love for the game.
🗓 Tuesdays – 4th Class
🗓 Wednesdays – 5th & 6th Class
🤔Chess is a fantastic way for children to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and concentration, all in a fun, competitive, and inclusive environment.
We are very proud of Scoil na mBuachaillí’s strong tradition of chess, with many of our players achieving great success at both local and regional competitions over the years.
🙏A heartfelt thank you to Ms Niamh MacAuley for organising the club and teaching our learners every Tuesday. Thanks also to Mr Ciarán Crowley and Ms Laura Connolly, who teach and guide our senior players on Wednesdays. Their dedication and encouragement are key to the continued success and enjoyment of chess in our school.
🌍💨 Air Quality Awareness in Action! 💚
Our 3rd Class pupils are excited to be participating in the GLOBE Ireland Air Quality Campaign — a nationwide initiative focused on monitoring nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels in the air around schools.
🧠 As part of this real-world science project, the class received special air quality monitoring tubes and began by learning all about air pollution: what it is, where it comes from, and how it affects our health.
🌫️ After some great discussion and critical thinking, the pupils selected three key locations to place the tubes:
📍 The bypass entrance to the school
📍 The main entrance on O’Rahilly Street
📍 The playing pitch in the school yard (a more sheltered location)
These spots were carefully chosen to capture different levels of traffic exposure and environmental conditions. The tubes will stay in place for four weeks before being collected and analysed — giving us valuable insight into local air quality. 📊
This hands-on initiative supports both our Green-Schools programme and the fantastic work of Clonakilty Tidy Towns, helping our pupils become active, informed citizens who care for their environment. 🌱👏

👩🏻🍳At our school, we’re lucky to have more than just a fantastic school secretary—we have an award-winning baker in our midst! Noreen, our much-loved secretary, is not only the friendly face who keeps things running smoothly in the office, but she’s also a talented baker who competed in the 2024 National Ploughing Championships.
⏲️Noreen’s baking talents are well known throughout the school community, and we are delighted that she regularly shares her passion with the children. Recently, Rang 7 made a special request to Principal Norma Harte—could Noreen be excused from her usual duties for a while… so she could help them bake? It was a heartfelt plea that Mrs Harte couldn’t possibly turn down!
🥰Together, the pupils and Noreen rolled up their sleeves, donned aprons, and got stuck into a hands-on baking session. From measuring ingredients to mixing, kneading, and of course—tasting—there were smiles all around. These sessions not only teach valuable life skills, but also foster teamwork, patience, and plenty of joy.
😍We’re so proud to have such talented and generous staff who go above and beyond to make learning meaningful, memorable, and fun. A huge thank you to Noreen for sharing her time, her skills, and her secret recipes with us all!
🧁There’s always something cooking at our school—and sometimes, it smells like freshly baked scones! 🧁

🐔❤️ Joyful Moments with Our School Chickens!
There’s something truly special about the simple joy our school chickens bring to the children—especially to those in Rang 7.
From collecting eggs to helping with feeding, the children love spending time with the hens. These gentle, daily interactions help build confidence, encourage responsibility, and provide a calming, sensory-rich experience that supports wellbeing.
The chickens have become more than just part of our school garden—they’re part of our school community. 🐓💛

📚 Library Visit!
This week our 3rd class pupils visited Clonakilty Library Cork County Council Library & Arts Service —just a short walk from school! We're so lucky to have such a brilliant resource right on our doorstep.
The children loved exploring new books, signing up for library cards, and discovering the joy of independent reading. 💫
At school, we’re passionate about fostering a love of reading—and the local library plays a big part in that. A huge thank you to the team at Clonakilty Library for the warm welcome!
Let’s keep reading, exploring, and learning—one book at a time. 📖❤️
