Well done and congratulations to our Sciath na Scol hurling team on an outstanding performance in this year’s competition! 🎉👏 This is only the second year of the West Cork Hurling Sciath na Scol, and we are so proud of how far our team has come. 💪💙 Scoil na mBuachaillí began in Roinn (Division) 2 last year, and through hard work, determination, and teamwork, progressed to compete in Roinn 1 this year. 🔝🏆 Following impressive wins in September against Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin and Laragh NS, the team travelled to Ahamilla for the semi-final, where they played a thrilling match against Newcestown NS. After a superb battle, SNB emerged victorious and advanced to the Roinn 1 Final against Timoleague NS. The boys showed exceptional skill, teamwork, and spirit throughout the final. 🙌 While Timoleague NS claimed the Cup, our players can be very proud of their achievement — competing at the highest level and representing our school with pride. 💙🤍 A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches — Ms Marie Forristal, Mr Ciarán Crowley, and Mr Seán Daly — for their time, guidance, and encouragement. 👏 Clonakilty GAA Club Clonakilty GAA Sports & Leisure Complex
🌍 Plastic Planet at Clonakilty Library! 🌿 Today, our 3rd–6th Class pupils enjoyed an inspiring performance of Plastic Planet at Cork County Council Library & Arts Service. Huge thanks to the library team for the warm welcome and for organising such a fantastic educational experience! 🙏📚 The show explored what makes our planet so special — from animal behaviour to how trees communicate — while encouraging pupils to think about their own impact on the environment and how they can help fight climate change. 🌱💚 Interactive, engaging, and thought-provoking, Plastic Planet reminded us all of the power we have to protect our planet. 🌎✨ #PlasticPlanet #ClonakiltyLibrary #EnvironmentalEducation #ClimateAction
🌬️📍 Checking the air around our school! Today 3rd class took down our air quality tubes as part of the GLOBE Ireland Air Quality Campaign. We chose three locations around the school — near the road, the playground, and the back pitch — to see how air quality might differ across our school grounds. 🏫✨ The tubes are now on their way to the lab, and we’re excited to see the results! The data will help us understand our local air quality and shape a plan of action to make our school environment even cleaner and healthier. 🌿💨 #GLOBEIreland #AirQuality #CitizenScience #STEM #CleanAir #OurSchoolEnvironment
🌾 "S-Caretaker Finbarr for President" - Leap Scarecrow Festival 2025 The 2025 Leap Scarecrow Festival runs from October 20th to November 1st, and this year’s event promises to be full of creativity, colour, and community spirit! 💕We’re delighted to share that Rang 7 proudly accepted the challenge to represent Scoil na mBuachaillí in this year’s Scarecrow Competition. Their theme for the Scarecrow Festival is both clever and heartfelt — the Presidential Election, inspired by our very own Finbarr O’Connor, our incredible school caretaker. We have affectionately nicknamed our entry “S-Caretaker Finbarr for President.” 🎉 🪚Finbarr has been part of the Scoil na mBuachaillí family since 2000, and in that time he has truly shaped our school into the wonderful place it is today. His list of projects is endless — but among his most recent achievements are building stages for our school performances and transforming our staffroom, including the installation of a fantastic new kitchen over the summer of 2025. 🛠️A gifted tradesperson, Finbarr’s creativity, dedication, and generosity of spirit shine through in everything he does. He is always willing to lend a hand and share his skills, inspiring pupils to be hands-on, inventive, and to think like engineers. He is out bright and early every single morning with the leaf blower, making sure all playgrounds, courts, play areas, and carparks are leaf-free. His love and care for the school hens is celebrated in the scarecrow design with the addition of a little chicken — a nod to Finbarr’s nurturing spirit. It’s no surprise that Rang 7 chose Finbarr as their inspiration for this year’s festival entry. Our "S-Caretaker" is now on display in Leap. A huge thank you to all the pupils and staff who have offered their time, energy, and support to bring this project to life — your teamwork and enthusiasm truly embody the spirit of Scoil na mBuachaillí. 😲❤️Please check out the school website to see Finbarr’s reaction when we surprised him with the project. In true Finbarr style, he even accompanied the staff to Leap to help install the SNB Scarecrow 2025! 💪🌟 Well done Rang 7 — and thank you, Finbarr, for all that you do for our school! #LeapScarecrowFestival #SNDCommunity #SCaretakerFinbarrForPresident I Love Clonakilty
😊There was great excitement in Scoil na mBuachaillí last Friday as pupils took part in the first stage of this year’s Student Council Elections! 🙏By the end of the day, each class had chosen their candidates to run for election, following lively presentations where pupils shared their manifestos and ideas for making our school an even better place. The selection process involved three steps: 🟡 One Golden Ticket candidate was chosen by the class teacher. 🟢 Golden Ticket candidates were chosen by other staff members — such as the Principal, Support Teacher, SNA, Secretary or Caretaker. 🔵 Golden Ticket candidate was selected by the class through a secret ballot. A key part of the process is the Student Electoral Committee, which ensures the elections are fair, well-organised, and run smoothly. A huge thank you to our dedicated staff — Niamh Mac Auley, Ciarán Crowley and Laura Connolly — for putting in so much time and effort to support and guide the Committee. Their commitment has allowed pupils to gain hands-on experience in leadership, organisation and teamwork. Once chosen, the candidates in each class will form their own campaign teams, dividing up classmates into “parties” to help design badges, posters, and campaign messages — and even add new ideas to their manifestos. Each group will come up with a creative party name and got busy preparing for the big election day! 🎉 The Student Council Election will take place on Wednesday, 22nd October, with paired voting between classes using real ballot boxes and ballot papers to make the experience both fun and fair. Well done to all our pupils for showing such enthusiasm, teamwork, and leadership throughout the process. We can’t wait to see who will be representing their classmates on the 2025 Student Council! 👏🗳️ #StudentCouncil #Leadership #PupilVoice #ScoilnamBuachaillí #ActiveCitizenship #CorkSchools

It’s that exciting time of year again — Maths Week 2025! From October 11th to 19th, Scoil na mBuachaillí joined schools all across Ireland to celebrate the fun, creativity, and importance of mathematics in our everyday lives. Maths Week is Ireland’s biggest celebration of maths and numeracy, promoting the idea that maths is for everyone — not just something we learn in class, but something we use every single day! Throughout the week, all classes took part in a variety of exciting maths activities, including: 🔹 Maths stations with puzzles and problem-solving challenges 🔹 A Starburst data investigation 🔹 Fun online quizzes and games 🔹 Chess lessons, exploring logic, strategy, and mathematical thinking 🔹 The Ireland Rocks Times Tables Tournament, where pupils competed to test their times tables skills against schools across the country! To celebrate Maths Week, Ms. Mac Auley (Maths Coordinator) and Mrs. Norma Harte (Principal) ordered new hands-on maths equipment for all classes to enjoy. These new resources help pupils explore mathematical ideas in an active, practical way — encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Hands-on maths equipment supports learning by: ✅ Making abstract concepts easier to understand ✅ Encouraging active participation and exploration ✅ Building confidence through discovery and play ✅ Helping pupils see how maths connects to real life It was a fantastic week full of enthusiasm, teamwork, and creativity — proving that maths is not only useful but also great fun for everyone! Thank You to Ms Mac Auley for organsing.
🥳🥳UPDATE🥳🥳 🪶Our Rescued Gull’s Recovery Our rescued gull is making wonderful progress under the care and guidance of Claire Kavanagh, SNA. 🐦 Earlier this week, she was checked over by the veterinary team at Fachtna Collins Bantry. Thankfully, her injuries were only superficial and have been healing well with some gentle care and anti-inflammatories. In the evenings, she enjoys spending time on her “crow’s nest” before settling into her secure, fenced-in bed in the sitting room. When she’s ready to rest, she hops down and makes her way to the boot room, where her straw-filled cardboard box awaits. During the day, she has access to a large stable — complete with a sea buoy and plenty of food and water — where she can practice flying and continue to build her strength. She’s improving every day, and we’re hopeful she’ll be ready for release soon. The students have been following her recovery with great interest and have learned some fascinating facts along the way — for example, gulls can drink both sea and fresh water! They have special glands above their eyes that filter out the salt, which they then expel (quite dramatically!) through their noses. This project, led by Claire Kavanagh, SNA, has provided a unique hands-on learning experience for our students and a wonderful example of compassion and care for wildlife.
