Physical Activity

23rd Jan 2026

At Scoil na mBuachaillí, physical activity is a vibrant and valued part of everyday school life. Through our Active School Flag journey, we aim to ensure that every pupil has regular opportunities to move, play, learn and be active throughout the school day in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.

Physical activity extends far beyond PE lessons and is embedded across our school community through playground activities, Active Breaks, Learning on the Move initiatives, sports leadership opportunities and whole-school events. All pupils enjoy twice-daily playground breaks where they are encouraged to run, play and take part in active games using a wide range of playground equipment.

Our Playground Leaders and Playground Pals programmes promote leadership, teamwork and inclusion across all class levels. Senior pupils help organise games, referee activities, manage equipment and support younger pupils during playtime, helping to create a positive and active playground environment for all.

The Active School Walkway is used regularly by all classes for Active Breaks and Learning on the Move activities. Pupils engage in movement-based learning across subjects including literacy, numeracy, history, geography and SESE through walking activities, outdoor learning, active stations and problem-solving tasks. These approaches help to reduce sedentary time while increasing pupil engagement, wellbeing and enjoyment of learning.

Whole-school initiatives such as the Active Break Every Day challenge and our Run Around Europe challenge encourage daily movement and active participation for every pupil. Physical activity is also celebrated through Active School Week, themed activity days, sports events and a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities throughout the year.

At Scoil na mBuachaillí, we are proud to foster a school culture where movement, participation, inclusion and wellbeing are promoted and celebrated every day. Physical activity is promoted not only to support fitness and skill development, but also to enhance wellbeing, confidence, social interaction and positive mental health across the school community.
