It’s that exciting time of year again — Maths Week 2025! From October 11th to 19th, Scoil na mBuachaillí joined schools all across Ireland to celebrate the fun, creativity, and importance of mathematics in our everyday lives. Maths Week is Ireland’s biggest celebration of maths and numeracy, promoting the idea that maths is for everyone — not just something we learn in class, but something we use every single day! Throughout the week, all classes took part in a variety of exciting maths activities, including: 🔹 Maths stations with puzzles and problem-solving challenges 🔹 A Starburst data investigation 🔹 Fun online quizzes and games 🔹 Chess lessons, exploring logic, strategy, and mathematical thinking 🔹 The Ireland Rocks Times Tables Tournament, where pupils competed to test their times tables skills against schools across the country! To celebrate Maths Week, Ms. Mac Auley (Maths Coordinator) and Mrs. Norma Harte (Principal) ordered new hands-on maths equipment for all classes to enjoy. These new resources help pupils explore mathematical ideas in an active, practical way — encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Hands-on maths equipment supports learning by: ✅ Making abstract concepts easier to understand ✅ Encouraging active participation and exploration ✅ Building confidence through discovery and play ✅ Helping pupils see how maths connects to real life It was a fantastic week full of enthusiasm, teamwork, and creativity — proving that maths is not only useful but also great fun for everyone! Thank You to Ms Mac Auley for organsing.
🥳🥳UPDATE🥳🥳 🪶Our Rescued Gull’s Recovery Our rescued gull is making wonderful progress under the care and guidance of Claire Kavanagh, SNA. 🐦 Earlier this week, she was checked over by the veterinary team at Fachtna Collins Bantry. Thankfully, her injuries were only superficial and have been healing well with some gentle care and anti-inflammatories. In the evenings, she enjoys spending time on her “crow’s nest” before settling into her secure, fenced-in bed in the sitting room. When she’s ready to rest, she hops down and makes her way to the boot room, where her straw-filled cardboard box awaits. During the day, she has access to a large stable — complete with a sea buoy and plenty of food and water — where she can practice flying and continue to build her strength. She’s improving every day, and we’re hopeful she’ll be ready for release soon. The students have been following her recovery with great interest and have learned some fascinating facts along the way — for example, gulls can drink both sea and fresh water! They have special glands above their eyes that filter out the salt, which they then expel (quite dramatically!) through their noses. This project, led by Claire Kavanagh, SNA, has provided a unique hands-on learning experience for our students and a wonderful example of compassion and care for wildlife. ⚽ Exciting News for Scoil na mBuachaillí! ⚽ UPDATE - We’re delighted to share that Scoil na mBuachaillí recorded an impressive 6–2 victory over Scoil Eoin, Ballincollig. The match was full of excitement, skill, and great teamwork from both sides, and our boys did the school proud with their effort and sportsmanship. We were thrilled to take part on Monday October 13th, in the very first Primary Cork Cups Soccer Competition, proudly representing our school at primary schools level. It is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to showcase their skills, teamwork, and sporting spirit against schools from across the county. A huge thank you to Clonakilty RFC for kindly allowing us to use their astro pitch — your support is greatly appreciated! 🙏 #ScoilnaMBuachaillí #CorkCups #SchoolSoccer #TeamSpirit #Clonakilty #Ballincollig #ProudSchoolMoment Clonakilty AFC Clonakilty Notice Board
🥚🧠 A Special Combined Celebration at Scoil na mBuachaillí! 🎉 Today, we joyfully celebrated both World Egg Day and World Mental Health Day at Scoil na mBuachaillí – a perfect pairing of fun, learning and wellbeing! 💛🐣 Our beloved hens – Gloria, Rita & Betty – laid 18 eggs this week alone! 🐓💪 👩‍🍳 Ms. O’Shea will be baking brownies with the boys using our very own fresh eggs 🍫 🔨 Our amazing caretaker Finbarr is working with pupils to upcycle an old cabinet into a shaded area for the hens – sustainable & snug! 🌧️ ✨Inspired by the calm and happiness our hens bring, we’re today launching a new wellbeing science project: “Are our school chickens improving our wellbeing?” The pupils will explore how caring for animals can boost mental health, with plans to share their findings at science fairs in Limerick and Dublin next term! 🚀 Of course, there’s always joy (and a little chaos!) when Gloria, Rita, or Betty wander into a classroom uninvited – they’re truly part of our school family! 😂🐔 From eggs to experiments, baking to wellbeing, today’s combined celebration reminds us how much our chickens enrich school life! #WorldEggDay #WorldMentalHealthDay #Wellbeing #SchoolChickens #STEM #ScoilNaMBuachaillí #chickensinclass Clonakilty Notice Board Clonakilty Tidy Towns Green-Schools
🛰️Pupils at Scoil na mBuachaillí had an out-of-this-world experience as we celebrated World Space Week from October 4th to 10th! 👩🏼‍🚀The theme of the week inspired curiosity, creativity, and plenty of excitement as students explored the wonders of the universe in fun and active ways. One of the highlights was our space-themed cycle lessons with Ulick. Our youngest pupils became “astronauts-in-training,” learning how to safely start and stop their rockets — a fun and engaging way to teach the basics of cycling through the imaginative world of space travel! 🚀Back in the classroom, the creativity continued with space-themed art projects. From swirling galaxies to colourful rockets, our pupils used their imaginations to bring the cosmos to life on paper.
Discovering Autumn in Our Local Area 🍁 🍂Senior Infants and 2nd Class have been out and about this week, exploring our local area to spot the signs of autumn. The children loved noticing the colourful leaves, shiny conkers, and the crisp feel of the air as the seasons begin to change. With the beautiful weather on our side, it was the perfect chance to enjoy nature, chat about what we could see and hear, and celebrate all the magic that autumn brings!
