🐔 Our School Chickens

Our school chickens are a much-loved and meaningful part of life at Scoil na mBuachaillí, Clonakilty. More than just pets, the chickens play an active role in learning, wellbeing, and daily school experiences.

Caring for the hens helps pupils develop responsibility, empathy, and a strong connection to nature. The chickens regularly feature in classroom learning across the curriculum — from science investigations and wellbeing studies to creative projects, baking, and Irish language storytelling.

The hens have even inspired a whole-school science inquiry exploring how interacting with animals can support pupil wellbeing. This project was selected for presentation at the Primary Science Fair at the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, highlighting the innovative and pupil-led learning taking place in our school.

From celebrating World Egg Day, to observing egg-laying, to enjoying fun enrichment activities in their spacious chicken house, the chickens bring joy, curiosity, and calm to our school community every day.

Our chickens are a wonderful example of how hands-on, real-life experiences enrich learning and support the wellbeing of all our pupils.
